Time Is Irrelevant
by Hailey Burns
"Don't worry about the time it will take to achieve a goal, the time is going to pass anyways."
I am a poet. I have been writing for a little more than five years, ever since I started high school.
At first, like anyone who's new to something, I wasn't that good at it. I sucked, really. But, it was the only way to sort through what was going on in my head, so I kept doing it.
Now, after having more people read my work than I ever thought possible I have impeccable self esteem when it comes to writing. I even have a binder with every single one of them printed out - in case I ever meet a publisher.
For about two and a half years I struggled with self-injury. When I was finally ready to get help this past January one of the few things that kept me going in my sobriety was being able to think back over my Poetry Journey.
Over those years of writing I did my research, learned and grew as a poet. Writing, and getting better at it, has honestly been one of the hardest things I've ever done but now that I have done it it gives me the confidence, and courage, to attack anything else I find in my way.
It is now May 21, 2010 as I write this and I am 139 days sober from self-injury. Tomorrow is my Five Month. :]
